My interest in skincare has increased significantly in the past few years (like since I turned 30… not a coincidence haha). I honestly never used to care about anything beauty-related and would basically spend as little of my budget as possible on products throughout my 20s. And on top of that I rarely even used the products that I did buy.
I have the gift of youthfulness on my side but over time I started to notice my skin wasn’t as… shall I say luminous? as it once was, so I decided to invest some more energy into finding something I felt good about. I experimented with a few different brands and tried to piecemeal some sort of routine together but was never really in love with any of it. Until recently.
Here are three simple changes I made to finally get consistent with taking better care of my skin!
1. I found products I look forward to using.
At the end of last year I was introduced to Beautycounter through a friend and was really intrigued by the idea of products that are equal parts effective and safe. Plus I could have browsed the website for hours because everything is so fun and beautifully packaged (I’m such a sucker for this). Over the next several months I ended up trying out a bunch of different items and have finally gotten to a point where I can say I love my skincare routine.

Beautycounter comes at a higher price point than your typical drug store brands. But I decided that if I actually look forward to using the products, they work well and I can feel good about the ingredients, it was worth it to me. My routine is like a mini at-home spa treatment for me (which is even more important now that I’m a mom) so I rarely skip it.
The Cleansing Balm is something I bought for my hospital bag when I was pregnant because I figured it would be a nice treat to have something more luxurious to use while there. I was so thankful I did this! It’s now my daily cleanser. I’ve never been much of a regimen person (I’m not interested in using six different products before I go to bed) so the balm is perfect for me because it has multiple other uses including overnight mask, makeup remover, after sun soother, etc. Plus it lasts forever.
2. I bought a ton of wash cloths.
It sounds so silly but this small change made a world of difference for me. I really hate washing my face without a wash cloth at night because the water goes everywhere and it’s just super messy. But I also felt like I was constantly running out of clean wash cloths, in which case I would just skip my night time routine. Simple fix? Order a ton of wash cloths so I never run out.
I bought these on Amazon and they’re both cost-effective and soft. Now I have enough to last until the next laundry day and washing my face is simple and mess-free.
3. I stopped waiting until just before bedtime.
Just after I had Callan, it was nearly impossible for me to stay awake for a TV show or movie. I would inevitably fall asleep and washing my face was the last thing I wanted to do before dragging myself into bed for the night. Thankfully this has gotten better!
The small change I made: brush my teeth and get my skincare routine done earlier. Nothing says you have to do it immediately before you go down for the night. Since I usually try to be in bed by 9:30, most nights I’ll do my thing between 8:30 and 9:00 and then go back to relaxing.
