Spicy Oat Milk Hot Chocolate

A cozy and creamy hot drink laced with flavors of a classic Mexican hot chocolate, in a plant-based version. Spicy Oat Milk Hot Chocolate will be a new favorite indulgence on snowy days.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp cacao powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 Tbsp cane sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • pinch of kosher salt
  • 1 cup oat milk 

Instructions

  1. Add cacao powder through salt to your largest mug. Add one tablespoon of very hot water (from tap, or can heat in the microwave if needed). Stir to form a thick chocolatey syrup. 
  2. Heat oat milk in a microwave-safe dish, like a liquid measuring cup, for 90 seconds (or until it reaches your preferred temperature).
  3. Pour oat milk over your chocolate syrup and stir with a spoon to combine. If you have a milk frother, use it now to get the top all foamy and delicious.
  4. Transfer to a smaller mug using the barista latte trick: use a large spoon to hold back the foam while you pour the hot chocolate, then spoon out the foam and/or pour it out last. Garnish with an additional pinch of cayenne pepper. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Feel free to sub any milk alternative for the oat milk.
  • Cacao powder is similar to cocoa powder and often used interchangeably. Just be sure it’s unsweetened and not the Dutch-processed variety.
